'Echoes'
Song Lyrics

Blue Flood
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

When you woke me up to tell me he was gone
I took your word, but not for long
'cause he came back real soon and you're all back there
Don't want to walk away, don't want to say I care

So you kept your place back there with him
And I waited for you, like I always did
It was not so good, I'd see you in your car
You would drive on by, I would not get far

CHORUS:
That song I hear, it's the one that we played
As you stood in the blue flood by the bar
It plays all night, over in my head
It never lets up, it never lets up at all
It never lets up at all

When you said that time there's no room for three
I thought you meant that was good for me
But now I'm in the cold and you're all back there
Was I supposed to know that you don't play fair

(CHORUS)(SOLO)
The alarm clock rang and I was on your side
Back where you once slept, back when we tried
Now the sun it burns after a restless night
Don't want to lift my head, don't want to face the light

(CHORUS)

Bottle Of Red
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

When I get home you'll be lost in your head
Your dreams are spilled, spilled all over the bed
Like that bottle of red
You said I'd only get mad...when I get home

When I get home it's like you're lost in a spell
So far away in your own prison cell
Or some private hotel
Oh hell, I'm locked out again

When I get home will you still be awake
Will you hide your hands so I can't see them shake
Like those plans that we'd make
They take a life of their own

When I get home, we'll forget what we said
And talk around, 'round tomorrow instead
Like that bottle of red
You said I'd only get mad

BRIDGE:
Live to fight another day
Live to fight another day
We'll live to fight another day...when I get home

When I get home...

Find A Way
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

The echo on the rails speaks of an absence
The only ghosts you hear have long since passed
This train pulls no gamblers
Just innocent bystanders
Who wouldn't know the truth even if they were asked

Connections to the land have long been severed
Insurance men took care of that
The news is coming down
Bought and sold in your hometown
Meaningless and never gonna last

CHORUS:
Can you help me find a way
To Big Rock Candy Mountain
Street corner play
Feel the touch of that string
Feel your touch night and day

Forgiveness
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

So ends another chapter
Turns out survival is all that matters
Bitterly ever after
But at least you got away

You had the key but you lost it
Burned that bridge when you crossed it
You can't imagine what caused it
Or who fanned the flames

Don't talk to me 'bout forgiveness
You haven't lived 'til you've lived through this
It might be none of my business
That's what you'd always say

Call it an act of treason
Call it prerogative, call it reason
Or blame it all on the seasons
November skies are gray

You keep speaking in codes
It's a language I used to know
Can't remember just how it goes

Let's call it even but odd
Why I am still holding the lightning rod
If there's a devil there must be...

(Just Call Me) Slow
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

CHORUS 1:
Just call me slow
How could I've known
That our last hello was the first goodbye
I see what you mean
The grass sure is green
At least from what I've seen
Here on my side

VERSE 1:
I came home early from work
Your voice sounded strange
Said you'd been thinkin' it over
And it's time for a change
I looked 'round the room and I saw nothin'
Nothin' remained
'cept a picture of us in the Ozarks
A smile on my face

CHORUS 2:
So just call me slow
'cause I should have known
That the telephone would deliver your lines
You said what you mean
Left it all on the machine
Wiped your conscience clean
And left me with mine

VERSE 2:
Red flashing light, second message
I pushed 'play'
You said 'P.S. don't try to find me
'cause I've gone away'
The words were few but the message
The message was plain
I thought you were happy but I guess it's
Just my mistake

Now I know why today's date was marked on the calendar
Circled in red
And I guess I know now why you cleaned out the 'frigerator
And took the sheets off the bed
Guess you can now cross me off
Of your to-do list
Feels like you threw me a fastball
I swung on and missed

Just call me...
Just call me slow
How could I've known
That our last hello was the first goodbye
I see what you mean
The grass sure is green
At least from what I've seen
Here on my side
At least from what I've seen
Here on my side

Kate Shelley
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

A rainy Iowa summer, eighteen eighty-one
Ground saturated and Honey Creek rising up
Kate and her mama in their house safe and warm
Hoping to wait out the storm

Kate and her family lived near the tracks
A long way from Ireland, they ain't goin' back
Papa died working on railroad time
Chicago and Northwestern line

The crash came like thunder in the hard-driving rain
Honey Creek trestle couldn't handle the strain
An inspection locomotive had plunged down below
The engineer was first to go

Well, now knowing the train schedules Kate feared what was next
Soon-to-be arriving Midnight Express
Passengers sleeping who'd soon meet their fate
She knew that it seldom ran late

With only papa's lantern only one thing to do
Run to Moingona station, forewarn the crew
Wind it was howling and the rain felt in sheets
In her nightgown and muddy bare feet

But to get to Moingona another bridge must be crossed
Des Moines River or all hope would be lost
Built with no planking, three feet 'tween the ties
One wrong step and she dies

In the midnight squall
Kate crawled on her knees
Five hundred feet praying God help me please
The ties and the spikes tore her skin and her clothes
Des Moines river raging, raging below

But the girl found Moingona, her story relayed
Stopped the Express and hundreds were saved
Made her a hero, fifteen-year-old girl
Story told 'round the world

Train's a comin'...
Train's a comin'...

Learning Curve
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

Captains of industry capture the imagination
A robber baron knows the dollar survives
Champagne spraying the ships of commerce
While the truckers roll at night
Yeah the truckers roll at night

Four-lane legends living on crystal and coffee
Diner's open but the cook she's gone home
Sugar, steel and rubber sand and salt
The maintainer owns the rights
The maintainer owns the rights

CHORUS:
Been so long since I heard a whistle
Thought for a second I could punch in
News traveled like a missile
There must be something
You can give me for my nerves
Cradle to grave it's a learning curve

Billfold cradles your crumbled telephone number
Between my license and the Lord's Prayer
Billboards counting the miles to heaven
Keep crawling toward the light
We're all crawling toward the light

(CHORUS)

Lonesome Boy
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

Steady now, lonesome boy
You barely had time to walk through that door
You've picked out one on the ol' dance floor
Looks good dressed in rhythm and blues
Strike the match and light the fuse
Better ask first 'fore you give her the news

Careful now, lonesome boy
Those pharmaceuticals will change your life
If you're not careful she'll make you her wife
There's something that you ought to know
That's an awful long row to hoe
Better pray for rain to get the crops to grow

CHORUS:
Oh, I just can't sit still
Knowing she is listening
To the sound of the whippoorwill
And what that bird is whisperin'
One call means no wedding this year
Two calls mean she's a spinster, I fear
Three calls mean matrimony dear

Steady now, lonesome boy
You might be brave but she's still the chief
Don't cross a girl and her beliefs
Not time to go off half-cocked
Kick the door when you should have knocked
You can't cross the threshold when the woodshed's locked

Careful now, lonesome boy
You're looking just like a bundle of nerves
It's time to get what you deserve
The church organ's already played
Had your chance to run but you stayed
Now better take your hands off that sweet bridesmaid

CHORUS:
Oh, I just can't sit still
Knowing she is listening
To the sound of the whippoorwill
And what that bird is whisperin'
One call means we'll leave it to fate
Two calls mean we're a bit too late
Three calls mean set a wedding date

(INSTRUMENTAL BRIDGE)

CHORUS:
Oh, I just can't sit still
Knowing she is listening
To the sound of the whippoorwill
And what that bird is whisperin'
One call means no wedding this year
Two calls mean she's a spinster, I fear
Three calls mean need a volunteer
Four calls mean you're roped like a steer
Five calls mean better sell the John Deere
Six calls mean matrimony dear

Merciful Conscience
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

Merciful conscience
Those words are burned in my mem'ry
I wasn't sure of your meaning but I
Took a guess it was a test of faith
Merciful Conscience
Didn't ask for my permission
Said yes on one condition, so why'd
You let me try to find my way

How did you keep it in
The words I said were like cuts on your skin
Never caught on but you're hot on my heels
Wish I had something more
Than what to pray forgiveness for
Oh merciful now I see
You knew it all, you passed it on...to me

Merciful conscience
When you'd say it, it felt contagious
If I had a brain I'd be dangerous but I
Took a guess it was a test of faith
Merciful conscience
You helped me find my way home
How to lose all of that anger that I
Could never manage on my own

How did you keep it in
The words I said were like bugs on your skin
Pretty good kid when you are fast asleep
If hell freezes it'll be too soon
About as helpful as a man on the moon
Oh merciful now I know
You kept it all, you told 'em all...where to go

(Instrumental Solo/Bridge)

(Drum Break)

Merciful conscience
Those words are burned in my mem'ry
I wasn't sure of your meaning but I
Took a guess it was a test of faith
Merciful conscience
You helped me find my way home
How to lose all of that anger that I
Could never manage on my own

Merciful conscience
When you'd say it it felt contagious
If I had a brain I'd be dangerous...

Miles Of Rope
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

Could I get an answer, please
Before I end up on my knees
Don't make me put it in a letter
I'd swear if I didn't know you better
I'd say you're enjoying this
I'd say you're enjoying this

Song tripped my memory
To back where I used to be
When all my cares were in my mind
I could not keep what I could not find
I knew there must be more than this
I knew there must be more than this

CHORUS:
But you'd give me miles and miles of rope
You'd give me miles and miles of rope
But there's still miles and miles to go

Could I get an answer now
I'll pay you back when I know how
Don't make me put it in a love song
I'd swear if I hadn't known you so long
I'd say you're enjoying this
I'd say you're enjoying this

(CHORUS)

Picture
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

They took a picture, in perfect focus
They snapped an idea of themselves
We are a picture, in faded colors
Stuck with the trophies and placed on a shelf

But that's not me, it's not the thing I
Wanted you to remember me by
It is a picture of me in summer
Under a church calendar sky

Each day together's like a stolen moment to me
String 'em together and we'll build a life, you'll see

We're in this picture, like silent partners
A scrapbook memory of shadows and light
Holding each other, smiling at someone
Just out of range from the viewfinder's eye

But that's not you, you've got your own book
Full of images in sepia tones
Like in that picture of you in winter
Up to your knees in a blanket of snow

I'm not good at describing how it feels
Just say the word and I shall be healed

When The Time Is Right
(Schmidt, Pedersen) ©2008

I'm waiting
My eye on the road, my wheel to the shoulder
What did we know
Used-up past, paid with tomorrow

I'm waiting
For a message from another planet
Waiting
Taking nothin', nothin' for granted

CHORUS:
But when the time comes, when the time is right
Under a thunder moon, after the rivers rise
Is that the Northern Star or just a satellite
Because the time will come, when the time is right

I'm waiting
My eye on the road, my wheel to the shoulder
We'll never know
The plans that were made, I had to throw them away

(CHORUS)
